Projecte NINAM is a platform for the study of cetaceans northwestern Mediterranean basin that operates basically in the Natural Park of Cap de Creus (Catalonia) located at the northeastern tip of peninsular Spanish territory. Our home port is Roses. Since 2004 we conduct research on population control and identification of cetacean species listed in Annex II,IV of the Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC on conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna) present in the protected area and the Cap de Creus canyon. Project Physalus develops during spring and looks over Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus) in front of the coast of Cape Creus, in its migration towards the Ligurian Sea, where it outcrops in search of krill (Northern krill ). We also study the presence of other species of cetaceans such as dolphins: (Stenella coeruleoalba) common (Delphinus delphis) and Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), pilot whales: gray (Grampus griseus) and long-finned (Globicephala melas) and sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus).

Also the presence of marine turtle (Caretta caretta) and coastal/pelagic seabirds in the Skua Project.

Since 2007 we develop the Skua Project to produce an inventory of all seabird species listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive (Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds)that breed in Cape Creus. This study also is focused on the seaward extensions to breeding colonies and coastal congregations of non-breeding seabirds.

Our studies have the logistic support of the authorities of Natural Park Cape Creus and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia (DMAH).

Our findings will be used to inform the future designation of Cape Creus Canyon's MPA (Marine Protected Area).

Projecte NINAM also use the ecocharter as a vehicle of scientific awareness and environmental education in the first person to participate in research on cetaceans and seabirds in the area of the Natural Park of Cap de Creus.

NINAM is the acronym formed by the name of 5 bottlenose dolphins with whom we work a long time: Nica, Inuk, Nereida, Anak and Moana. It is a tribute to them that captives may not revert back to the sea.
